Rank 8 craze

Move every piece to rank 8, where it leaves the board, without touching another piece's beam, in the fewest moves.

What it trains

Planning several moves ahead while reading every square a piece attacks. A move is refused the instant it would touch an attacked square or attack another piece, with the line that refused it drawn on the board, so seeing the attacks is the whole drill.

How to use it

A composed board of your own pieces: up to two knights, two bishops, two rooks and one queen. Move them all to rank 8, where each one leaves the board, one move at a time, never stopping in or passing through a square another piece attacks, and never landing where it would attack another piece. On the first board, picking up a piece shows the squares it may not touch; after that, seeing them is the drill.

No move can trap you: every position can still be cleared, so a wrong move only costs moves. Each board's fewest moves is worked out exactly, not estimated, and it is always more than the moves each piece would need if it stood alone on the board: one more on the first board, four more on the last. A board counts when you match it with no move refused and no hint taken. Six boards per run.
